Lohri is a Punjabi folk festival celebrated to mark the passing of chilly winters and the beginning of sunny days. The festival is primarily celebrated in the Northern part of India mostly in the states of Haryana and Punjab. Lohri, which is also called the festival of harvest, is celebrated by lighting a huge bonfire at night. People meet and greet around the fire, sing and dance together, and celebrate with festive foods like gajak, revadis, and peanuts which are specially made during this time. The folklore tale of Dulla Bhatti can also be heard in many Lohri songs.
On this festival, children go around homes singing the traditional folk songs in unison and ask for "Lohri" i.e. gifts, food, money, and blessings. People wear beautiful clothes, come together to celebrate, and dance to the beats of dhol.
Every year, Lohri is celebrated with great enthusiasm on a day before Sankranti, which usually falls on either 13th or 14th January. And so, Lohri also marks the end of the winter solstice.
