Karwa Chauth will be observed on October 13. This festival is celebrated by Hindus on the fourth day of the Krishna Paksha or the dark fortnight of Kartik month. Kartik overlaps with the October and November months of the Gregorian calendar. The name of the month is derived from the Krittika Nakshatra.
Karwa Chauth is observed by Hindu married women. The celebration is mostly in the northern parts of the country. On this day, women wake up early in the morning and have sargi. The sargi is consumed before the sunrise. After this, from sunrise till the moon is visible in the evening women do not break their fast. Only after seeing the moon and offering it arghya women break their fast.
The festival signifies the importance of family life. Married women pray for the long life of their husband.
There are several stories and narrations around the Karwa Chauth festival. The most popular among all is the story of Veervati. She had seven brothers who loved her dearly. After her marriage she started doing the Karwa Chauth rituals for her husband. However, her brothers could not bear seeing her fast from sunrise till late in the evening. Following the custom, they asked Veervati to break her fast telling her falsely that the moon has risen. With this, she got the news of her husband's death.
Grief stricken Veervati prayed to God, who then asked to observe Karwa Chauth sincerely the next year. Veervati had to wait for a whole year to get her husband back.
