Adam Sandler's iconic comedy, Happy Gilmore, has experienced a resurgence in popularity on Netflix after news of a sequel being in the works. Originally released in 1996, the film initially received mixed reviews from critics but has since gained a dedicated fan base, solidifying its status as one of Sandler's most beloved movies.

Happy Gilmore recently climbed to the fifth spot on Netflix's Top 10 Movies list, joining other popular titles like The Little Things, Baby Driver, Glass, and Space Jam: A New Legacy. This surge in viewership coincides with the announcement of Happy Gilmore 2 entering development for Netflix.

The sequel news was first revealed by Sandler's co-star, Christopher McDonald, who shared that Sandler had shown him the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2. McDonald expressed excitement about the project, acknowledging the demand from fans for a continuation of the story.

The original Happy Gilmore, directed by Dennis Dugan, follows Sandler's character, an ex-hockey player with a fiery temper who transitions to golf to save his grandmother's home. The film also features McDonald as Shooter McGavin, the rival golfer, along with Julie Bowen and Carl Weathers in supporting roles.

Sandler has confirmed the sequel's development, mentioning that he and co-writer Tim Herlihy are actively working on crafting a compelling storyline. The duo is enthusiastic about the project, assuring fans that they are dedicated to delivering an entertaining follow-up that honors the spirit of the original film.

While some cast members from the first movie have since passed away, Sandler expressed a commitment to paying tribute to them in Happy Gilmore 2. He emphasized the importance of honoring their contributions to the film and ensuring their presence is felt in the sequel.

Happy Gilmore is currently available for streaming on Netflix, with the sequel slated to premiere on the platform in the future. Fans can anticipate a continuation of the beloved story with new adventures and familiar faces, promising an exciting addition to the Happy Gilmore franchise.
