Happy Ed Balls Day 2020! Here's why social media users mark April 28 with the ex-politician's name

Each year, on April 28, social media users celebrate Ed Balls Day.

Eight years ago today, in 2011, then Labour shadow chancellor Ed Balls typed his own name into Twitter to search for an article about himself.

But by accident, instead of searching his name he tweeted it out, and left the tweet up instead of deleting it once he recognised his mistake.

The mistake delighted Twitter users - and Ed Balls Day was born.

Every year Twitter celebrates the gaffe. The hashtag #EdBallsDay is currently trending online, having already been tweeted almost 2,000 times today and yesterday in the run-up to the anniversary.

Some people this year have joked about lockdown making it harder to celebrate the important day.

Ed Balls himself is now in on the joke, and often tweets about his mishap on the day.

In 2016, he baked a cake to commemorate his error, after his wife, Labour MP Yvette Cooper, suggested it.

This year, he has marked the event by partnering with BBC Bitesize to teach children about the volume of balls while schools are closed due to coronavirus.

Ed Balls was Labour's shadow home secretary and shadow chancellor under Ed Miliband's leadership. He lost his seat, Morley and Outwood, in the 2015 general election.

He took part in The Great Sport Relief Bake Off in 2016, followed by Strictly Come Dancing, where he made it to week ten before being knocked out.

According to a recent YouGov poll, he is the most popular living Labour politician, and the third most popular UK politician.
