March 03--Students and staff members at Mariners Christian School in Costa Mesa partied it up for Dr. Seuss' birthday Wednesday by dressing up as their favorite book characters and spending the day reading.
The novel activities were part of the National Education Association's Read Across America Day, which celebrates the late author's birthday and encourages students across the country to pick up a book and read.
"There's nothing better than being able to participate in a program that calls for all kids in every community across the nation to celebrate reading," said Reggie Biancalani, Mariners Christian's elementary school principal. "It's something that unites all kids, regardless of where they attend school."
Mariners invited its teachers, administrators, office workers, specialists and school nurse to read their favorite books to students in transitional kindergarten through fifth grade.
Some classes joined a livestream reading of the book "Going Places" by its authors, Peter and Paul Reynolds, from FableVision Studios in Boston.
The 3-million member National Education Association is a union representing public school teachers and support personnel, faculty and staff members at colleges and universities, retired educators, and college students preparing to become teachers.
