Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh celebrates his 91st birthday

New Delhi: Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh is celebrating his 91st birthday today. Lot many people from across the country are congratulating Dr. Singh on social media. On Tuesday, many leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Manmohan Singh and wished him a long and healthy life. On this occasion, common people are also remembering the contribution of Manmohan Singh to the development of the country as Prime Minister for 10 long years.

Radical economic reforms in the country
Dr. Manmohan Singh is also considered as a leading economist in the world. Singh played an important role in radical economic reforms in the country in the 1990s.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Dr Manmohan Singh through social media platform 'X': "Happy birthday to former PM Dr. Manmohan Singh ji. I pray for your long and healthy life."

Rare example of simplicity and decency in politics
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge took to social media platform 'X' to congratulate the former PM: "On his birthday, I extend my best wishes to Former Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh ji. He is a rare example of simplicity, dignity and grace in politics. A true statesman Prime Minister, whose actions spoke more than his words, we are forever grateful for his tremendous contribution to the nation. Wishing him good health, happiness and a long life ahead."

Nation building and economic upliftment of the people
Rahul Gandhi, while wishing Dr. Singh said: "Former Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh ji’s integrity, unwavering commitment to nation-building and economic upliftment of the masses will always be an inspiration to me. Wishing him good health and happiness on his birthday.."

Twice Prime Minister of the country and Governor of RBI
Manmohan Singh served as the Prime Minister of the country for two terms from 2004 to 2014. Before becoming the Prime Minister, he served as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) from 1982 to 1985. He was also the Finance Minister in the government of former Prime Minister Narasimha Rao. He played a major role in bringing economic liberalization in India in 1991. Because of him the 'License Raj' could end in the country.

Higher Education
Manmohan Singh studied from Panjab University and then went to Britain for further education. He obtained his degree with first class in Economics from Cambridge University, Britain. The former Prime Minister completed his D.Phil in Economics from Oxford University in 1962. He also served as a faculty member of Panjab University and Delhi School of Economics.

Held many important positions
Manmohan Singh held several key positions in the Government of India during the 1970s and 1980s.

Famous for economic reforms in the world
After a brief stint in the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Secretariat, he served as Secretary-General of the South African Commission in Geneva between 1987 and 1990. He is also known for many economic reforms in the world.

Born in Punjab province of British India
Former PM and Congress leader Manmohan Singh was born on September 26, 1932 in Chakwal district ( now in Pakistan) of Punjab province of British India.
