Happiness charity leader leaves after tweet promoting acid attack on Nigel Farage

An employee has left a Bristol charity following a probe into tweets about attacking Nigel Farage and "killing" rich people.

Ruth Townsley, head of measurement and policy at Happy City, appeared to put a post on her Twitter account advocating violence against the Brexit Party leader.

Farage was doused with a milkshake while campaigning in Newcastle yesterday (May 20) ahead of the European elections. Paul Crowther, 32, has been charged with common assault and criminal damage.

A tweet from her account read: "Bravo to Paul Crowther, good on you mate. Great that milkshakes have become a thing when it comes to the racists in our midst. I'd prefer acid but milkshakes will do for now I guess."

Another tweet on her account in 2017 said: "I've decided that violence against the rich is entirely justified and it's time to start killing them. That fella in the US got it right."

Happy City, which measures and promotes the happiness of people in Bristol, said at 11am today that it had suspended Ms Townsley while it investigated the tweets.

The charity confirmed at 5pm today that Ms Townsley no longer works at Happy City.

What the charity says

A spokesman for the charity said: "Happy City is aware that Ruth Townsley has previously posted tweets from her personal account including one about the Nigel Farage protest.

"We do not in any way agree with the contents of these tweets which contradicted all of our strongly held values.

"We believe all politicians have a right to have their voices heard, and condemn violence of any sort at any level of society.

"Ruth Townsley no longer works with Happy City."

Happy City, based in Victoria Street, says its mission statement is to “change the compass from pointing to consumption and growth toward wellbeing for people, place and planet”.

Ms Townsley had worked at the community interest company from 2015.

Farage is the latest politician to have been covered in milkshake in recent weeks, after similar incidents involving right wing politicians Tommy Robinson and Carl Benjamin.
