This little satire on American life from physical theatre company Little D-fects is by no means perfect theatrical happiness, but it does offer an entertaining hour and shows signs of promise. Happiness is a corporate-run town that offers its residents dreams of an apple-pie community where every teenage girl is a cheerleader and the OAPs while away the afternoon on target practice at the local gun club. But, as a British TV crew soon discovers, happiness comes at a high price: strict rules about the colour of your drapes, the colour of your skin and your sexuality.
Although it plays to stereotypes, Happiness is smart and funny in its undercutting of the American dream and the small-town values that make the US so parochial. This is a pretty uneven hour in terms of performances and material, and some sequences are poor. But there is lots of energy and the show really takes flight in the dance sequences that depict the dark truths beneath the veneer of Happiness.
