Hans off: Australian cabaret star bows out of America's Got Talent

Hans performs on America's Got Talent.

Adelaide's fake-German trailblazing cabaret star Hans spiced up America's Got Talent live finals but has fallen short of reaching the semi-finals.

Entertainer Matt Gilbertson — who takes to the stage as Hans, a camp German accordion player — is the reality show's most successful Australian entrant after dazzling among fake snow and sequins during his rendition of Spice Up Your Life.

The performance at Hollywood's Dolby Theatre was in front of a TV audience in the millions, and judges including German supermodel Heidi Klum, Spice Girl Mel B and English reality television judge and producer Simon Cowell.

"What can I say, it is hardly the first vote this country has got wrong," the Aussie said after the results were released.

"And just like another famous German speaker, I'll be back."

Earlier today he told ABC Radio Adelaide he "never" thought he would be singing a Spice Girl song to a Spice Girl.

"I have to say I did feel a couple of times like, 'Am I actually in a coma and about to be woken up, is that what's happened here?'" he said in his faux German accent.

"I wasn't sure if, you know, I've had some sort of relapse or something which, if you know anything about my lifestyle, is likely to happen one day eventually."

But he added to have made it this far "was a dream come true".

"I had Jennifer Lopez's choreographer, some of Janet Jackson's dancers and I had Liberace's real piano — I mean what more could I want," he said.

"It really was his piano."

When asked about how he secured Liberace's piano, he replied: "Honey, you just ask around here and somehow it happens. It is not like doing the Fringe, let me put it that way."

While still waiting for the results, he said anything beyond his Spice Up Your Life performance would be a "bonus".

Fans will be left wondering what he had planned next after he said: "If you thought that was gay — wait for what I've got planned for the next one."
