Hannah Ferguson Confirms She Will Be Gunning For Albo’s Seat Of Grayndler At The Next Election

Co-founder and CEO of Cheek Media, Hannah Ferguson, has confirmed she will be running for the Sydney seat of Grayndler as an independent candidate at the next federal election, putting her in a head-to-head challenge with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

Taking to Instagram on Monday, July 27, Ferguson confirmed her intentions to run as an independent candidate for the inner-west Sydney seat, putting her in direct competition with Albo.

“I was born in Marrickville in 1998. At the time, Anthony Albanese had already been the federal member for two years. Back then, he held views that were much closer to those I currently hold. While I’ve grown up in different parts of the country — from south-west Sydney, to Orange, Brisbane and beyond — the Inner West is the place I now proudly call home,” Ferguson wrote.

“I believe we deserve better representation.”

Ferguson went on to explain that her decision to run for the seat of Grayndler came after she announced her intentions to run as an independent for the Senate, and that her announcement “is not about headlines or clickbait; it’s about hearing directly from people in my community who feel unrepresented”.

“The political system is broken,” she added.

“The major parties are answering to vested interests, not the communities they have been elected to serve. The Albanese Government currently holds a historic 94-seat super majority in the House of Representatives — yet all I hear from voters is disappointment and frustration.

“I am not here to play politics, that is just another reason Australians are fed up with the political party machinery. This is about fighting for better community representation and ensuring that local needs are heard and acted on. My intention is to keep running local events, keep listening to feedback and to keep learning from my community.”

Ferguson said she hoped to see people from Grayndler at their next local event, despite who they’ve previously voted for, stating that “this isn’t about ideological lines — but growing a movement of people who deserve to be heard”.

“This is a significant pursuit. I know it will be met with many attacks from both the media and politicians; I’m already experiencing them behind the scenes. This does not deter me,” Ferguson continued.

“We need more difficult people standing up and fighting to change the system that is failing so many.

“I hope you will join me to build a campaign that genuinely serves and reflects locals — not a party line. It’s time for a change.”

What will happen to Cheek Media?

Within her statement, Ferguson also touched on Cheek Media, revealing that she intends to “step away from the business at some stage next year to campaign full-time”. However, the business will continue to deliver content as she begins her race.

“For now, we have an amazing team who are delivering the progressive coverage that our audience trusts,” she penned.

“I will continue to publish disclaimers on the opinion content I produce for the platform. I want Cheek to remain independent and to exist beyond me.”

Hannah Ferguson receives support

Shortly after making the grand announcement, Ferguson received a plethora of support, with many expressing their excitement for the news. Some even wished that they lived in their seat so they could vote for her.

Ferguson’s chat comes a week after she hosted a “politics in the pub event” at Public House Petersham, where folks came around to voice political issues they’ve faced day-to-day.

The seat of Grayndler is staunchly considered a “very safe” Labor seat, with Albanese retaining the seat at the last federal election. However, with Ferguson entering the ring, anything could happen in 2028.
