This year’s Emmys ceremony resulted in a lot of first time winners. Which means that instead of a boring ceremony of the same people standing on stage over and over again, we had quite a few amazing speeches instead. Like Hannah Einbinder’s win for Hacks.
While Einbinder’s co-star, Jean Smart, has taken home the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, Einbinder’s win for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series was a first. And she didn’t waste her time on stage. During the broadcast, host Nate Bargatze had a running bit to try to keep timing short on speeches. If you went too long, the Boys and Girls Club of America would lose money from their donation he offered.
When Einbinder saw the clock winding down, she began to wrap up her speech. “I want to thank Jean Smart, who is like the sun, and I just get to stand in her warmth. I want to thank the cast and crew of Hacks,” Einbinder said. Then, she saw the money and made sure to end her speech on an important note. “I’ll pay the difference, sorry. Finally, I want to say, Go Birds, F*** ICE and Free Palestine.”
We can ignore the “Go Birds” part though. But Einbinder using her time to speak out against the genocide happening in Gaza was an amazing use of her platform. She could, as many do, have just worn her pin and not said another word but she used her speech for good and that’s pretty amazing.

Backstage, Einbinder was talking with a room of journalists alongside Smart when she was asked about her support of Palestine. Einbinder is among a long list of Jewish creatives who have spoken out against Israel’s continued attacks on Gaza and the Palestinian people. The attacks by Israel on Palestine have been labeled a genocide by Amnesty International and the United Nations.
“I thought it was important to talk about Palestine,” she said, “because it’s an issue that’s very dear to my heart. I have friends in Gaza who are working as frontline workers, as doctors right now in the north of Gaza, to provide care for pregnant women and for school children to create schools in the refugee camps. And it’s an issue that’s really close to my heart for many reasons.”
She went on to explain why she felt the need to speak out, saying “I feel like it is my obligation as a Jewish person to distinguish Jews from the State of Israel, because our religion and our culture is such an important and long standing institution that is really separate to this sort of ethno-nationalist state.” Einbinder was part of three major celebrities speaking out against the genocide at the Emmy Awards. Meg Stalter, who is also on Hacks, had a bag with “ceasefire” written on it and Javier Bardem was wearing a keffiyeh and talking about the genocide on the carpet.
