Hanham Woods Academy confirms coronavirus case as 34 students sent home

Another secondary school in South Gloucestershire has had to send pupils home after one tested positive for coronavirus.

On Friday, a letter was sent to parents of pupils at John Cabot Academy, in Kingswood, to inform them of a positive test of one of their Year 10 students.

Cabot Learning Federation has now confirmed another of its schools has had a positive test - just 1.5 miles away in Hanham.

In a statement, the federation said a year 9 pupil at Hanham Woods Academy had tested positive for coronavirus.

The school was made aware of this on Friday (October 2) and was able to alert parents and carers before school started.

The statement continued: "The school sought advice immediately from Public Health and, as a precautionary measure asked all 155 pupils of the year group not to attend school, until it could be confirmed who was a close contact.

"At present it is understood that of the 155 pupils in the year group, 34 children will be asked to self-isolate until October 13, as per the government guidance, from the date of the onset of the symptoms.

"One member of staff has also been identified as a close contact.

"All pupils not deemed as a close contact returned to school on Monday."

Cabot Learning Federation released more information about the case at John Cabot Academy as well.

The statement continued: "A year 10 pupil tested positive for Covid-19 on Tuesday, September 29.

"The child was asymptomatic and had undertaken a routine test at home.

"It is understood that of the 155 pupils in the year group, 58 children will be asked to self-isolate, as per the government guidance, from the date of the onset of the symptoms.

"No staff members have been identified as a close contact.

"All pupils not deemed as a close contact are able to remain in school."

In a statement on Friday afternoon (October 2), Bristol City Council listed the latest three schools with positive tests.

The total number of cases in schools in the Bristol area is creeping closer to 40, and many children are now confined to their homes in case they are carrying the virus.

It is thought the number of pupils combined across those schools, who have had to stay home and self-isolate in case they are infected, is in the high hundreds at least.
