Hanham residents evacuated after tree smashes through bedroom window during Storm Dennis

Residents from Hanham have been evacuated from a block of flats, just off Hanham High Street, after a tree smashed into a girl's bedroom window during Storm Dennis.

Hicks Gate Fire Station were in attendance at the flats in Grange Court and described how she was laying on her bed playing on her phone at the time when the branch came through her window. Thankfully she only suffered with a couple of small cuts.

A few casualties with minor injuries were treated by South Western Ambulance Service yesterday evening with Avon Fire and Rescue's Blue Watch from Hicks Gate Fire Station and Kingswood Fire Station in attendance.

It's believed that the tree fell down during the freak hail storm and winds which occurred yesterday evening around the Bristol area.

Officers from Avon and Somerset Police are still in attendance this morning and have cordoned off the block of flats until the tree is recovered.

People across Twitter reacted last night to the freak storm which hit Bristol, describing how the brief moment was rather terrifying.

One person tweeted: "Wow, glad no one was hurt. The street lights were bending like mad, my 2 year old was terrified!"

Another said: "It's a massive tree. Prob 60ft tall, shame to see it down. After all these years."

One other person said: "Poor bloke about 5 doors up just had a tree come through his house. He wasn't too bothered, told the plod he was off to the pub to have a few. Respect."

It's unknown when the residents of the flats will be allowed back into the premises.
