Hangover-free alcohol 'could be available within five years'

Whether it's gin, vodka or an ice cold beer, many of us enjoy a drink.

But the hangover? Not so much.

However, that morning-after-the-night-before vomiting, nausea and headache could soon be a thing of the past.

A synthetic alcohol that makes you feel drunk without the after effects of a hangover could be available within five years.

The fake alcohol, branded as Alcarelle, is in the final stages of development and still needs to be regulated.

But it's estimated the drink could be ready as soon as 2024, reports RSVP Live .

Professor David Nutt has designed Alcosynth so that it is impossible to end up excessively drunk or seriously hungover. The drink also won't be as harmful to the liver.

Professor Nutt told The Guardian: "There will obviously be testing to check the molecule is safe.

"And we need to show that it’s different from alcohol. We will demonstrate that it doesn’t produce toxicity like alcohol does."

Professor Nutt has been studying the brain and the effect alcohol has on it. Alcohol binds to all 15 different Gaba receptor subtypes, he said.

After his study, he said: "We know where in the brain alcohol has its "good" effects and "bad" effects, and what particular receptors mediate that – Gaba, glutamate and other ones, such as serotonin and dopamine.

"The effects of alcohol are complicated but … you can target the parts of the brain you want to target."
