Hanging an air freshener on your rear-view mirror could land you with a £1,000 fine

Many motorists like to jazz up their car with a bit of interior decor.

One very popular item to brighten up your dashboard and simultaneously make your car smell great is an air freshener.

Left to dangle from the rear-view mirror, they do a pretty good job.

However, drivers could be hit with a £1,000 fine and three penalty points for having one. The same goes for stickers.

The warnings, issued in the Highway Code and the Road Traffic Act, dictate that a driver is not permitted to use a vehicle if their view of the road is obstructed in any way, Mirror Online reports.

While not actually illegal to drive with large air fresheners or stickers, doing so could land you with a £100 on-the-spot fine.

If you then went on to challenge the fine in court, you could be facing a much nastier fine of £1,000 and three points, reports the Sun .

Rules around the practice became stricter after a taxi driver involved in a fatal crash with a pedestrian in 2008 was fined for having fluffy dice and two air fresheners danging in front of him.

The Road Traffic Act states "no person shall drive a motor vehicle on a road if he is in such a position that he cannot ... have a full view of the road and traffic ahead."

And The Highway Code says, " "windscreens and windows must be kept clean and free from obstructions to vision."

Hanging decorations from the rear-view mirror or using stickers to jazz up your car could also affect your insurer paying out if involved in an accident, the Mirror reports.

Motorists could even fail an MOT for having items in the windscreen that restrict a driver's view.

Rebecca Ashton, IAM RoadSmart head of driver behaviour, said: "Anything hanging from the rear-view mirror or anything placed on the windscreen could restrict the drivers view, things people use tend to vary from air fresheners and dice hanging from the mirror to fans, large sat-navs and even using the navigation on an iPad.

Martin Lewis reveals a really simple way everyone can save money

"Missing something because you had something obscuring your view could potentially be extremely dangerous, good driving involves exceptional observation skills, seeing things early allows you to anticipate and plan how you deal with hazards.

"We would suggest it is placed low on the windscreen, on the right hand side and if possible within the area where the windscreen wipers don’t clear. The main thing to remember is you should always try to avoid the drivers field of vision."
