Handy Pret a Manger hack will get you a month of coffee and smoothies for free

You can get a month of free coffee and smoothies - provided you are near a Pret a Manger.

The coffee chain lets you sign up to get five drinks a day for £20 a month, but the first month is free.

If you cancel after that time you walk away with nothing to pay, according to Martin Lewis' deals website MoneySavingExpert.

To get the free drinks, you have to sign up to the Pret Coffee subscription service and agree to the £20-a-month sign-up fee, at least at first.

You then get charged £1 to check your account, which Pret refunds after three days.

If you buy more than two coffees a day, keeping the Pret subscription deal would save you money (PA)

Then Pret emails you a QR code to your smartphone that cashiers scan when you get a drink in one of its branches.

Almost all of Pret's 370 stores are part of the scheme, except at Cherwell Valley, Rugby, Southgate and South Mimms service stations and the University of Warwick.

The deal lets you get up to five drinks a day, but you can only order one at a time and only every 30 minutes.

This includes all hot and cold drinks made by Pret staff, but not anything in a bottle or can.

It also excludes some of Pret's smoothies. Specifically, the cocoa, almond butter and banana, raspberry, mango and ginger and avocado, mango and ginger flavours.

You also get to tinker with the drinks however you want - so any milk alternatives, syrups and extra shots are included.

The deal means you could get up to 155 drinks a month for free, for a 31-day month.

If you drink a lot of coffee, and like buying it in a shop rather than making it, the subscription could even save you money.

A Pret latte costs £2.75, so if you buy two a week it will cost you £22 a month. Having a subscription would save you £2 a month, or £13 a month if you buy three a week.

Pret launched its subscription service last year to make up for people not going into its shops during lockdown.

It also started selling frozen croissants and granolas in Tesco stores as part of a “bake-at-home” range.

The chain shut 30 branches last August, affecting 2,800 workers, then another six stores in London in October, hitting another 400 people.

At the time, Pret UK managing director Clare Clough said this would help the business prepare for the "months ahead" after the pandemic battered its recovery.

It reopened 339 of its sites following the last Covid-19 lockdown, but was hamstrung by social distancing measures and lower numbers of office workers in major cities.

This month Pret also began opening stores inside Tesco supermarkets.

The sites - which will be run by Pret rather than Tesco - serve fresh food and hot drinks prepared by baristas.

The chain has opened four sites as a trial, with more to come if they are successful.
