Handsworth crash: Woman dies after police chase where 'car failed to stop'

A woman has died after a crash which happened moments after the car she was in failed to stop for police.

The 28-year-old suffered fatal injuries in Handsworth, Birmingham, last night after a two-car collision.

West Midlands Police said they had asked the driver of a blue Ford Fiesta to stop shortly before it collided with a Volkswagen Golf at 9.42pm.

The woman was rushed to hospital, but sadly nothing could be done to save her and she was pronounced dead.

Her next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist family liaison unit, Birmingham Live reports.

Three other people from the VW Golf suffered minor injuries, with one person taken to hospital for checks.

Video and pictures from the taped-off scene show several police cars manning the area while officers collect photographic evidence at around 10.30pm.

West Midlands Police said a 34-year-old man is assisting officers with their enquiries.

The force's Professional Standards Department has been informed as well as the IOPC, as is normal procedure in a collision where a police vehicle is involved.

The police watchdog has launched an investigation into the police chase.

An IOPC spokesperson said: "We are independently investigating the circumstances of a police pursuit prior to a collision in Crocketts Road, Birmingham on Saturday night in which a woman died.

"Our investigation follows a mandatory referral from West Midlands Police. We sent investigators to the scene and to the post incident procedure to begin gathering information."

Anyone with information can call the Collision Investigation Unit police on 101 quoting log number 2488 17 August.
