In its second year, the Canberra Day Appeal Hands Up 4 CBR Giving Day has raised more than $645,000 for local charities and community organisations.

The 48-hour fundraising event, starting on March 9, smashed its $500,000 goal before 5pm on the first day, well surpassing the $130,000 raised in 2020.

Launched by Hands Across Canberra, the giving day is the region's largest charitable fundraising appeal, with more than 60 local charities and community organisations participating in the event. The annual fundraising drive aims to get Canberrans to give where they live by shining a light on the needs of their immediate community.

Hands Across Canberra CEO Peter Gordon thanked all who contributed to the appeal, including the businesses and the Chief Minister's Charitable Fund which matched the donated funds.

"I could not be happier with the success of our second year," he said.

"I was deeply encouraged to see all aspects of the community eager to be involved - from big corporates, small businesses and even the charities who were extremely motivated to keep on going and raise as much as they could in the limited time frame.

"We hope the local community will come to see Canberra Day as our day to help our people and keep this fund-raising initiative for years to come".

More than 4000 donations were received during the appeal.

The Chappell Foundation donated $75,000 directly to local youth outreach service Raw Potential.

The Canberra Data Centre also donated $25,000 to kick off the event.
