Handmade masks anonymously donated to garbage-collection workers in western Japan

An anonymous person has donated handmade masks to garbage-collection workers in the city government of Karatsu, Saga Prefecture, bringing joy to city government officials.

The incident was reported during a meeting on Friday afternoon of the city government's headquarters of measures to cope with the new coronavirus infections.

According to the city government, three officials of its cleaning work center on Thursday found a small bag at a garbage collection site in the city's Yamamoto district while they were collecting garbage.

It contained three smaller bags in which there were three masks for adults and two for children. Together with the bags, there was written an unsigned message.

The message said: "I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Though I could not make them well, I'm glad if you use these."

The three officials brought the masks to the office and reported it to their supervisors.

Though the headquarters meeting was not open to the public, city government officials who attended the meeting voiced delights when the chief of the city government' citizens affairs department explained the incident.

The department chief told The Yomiuri Shimbun, "When everybody is so nervous, we are really glad about the kindness."

The city government said that officials of the cleaning work center are going to use the donated masks.
