A wheelchair that transforms into jinrikisha, or rickshaw, in emergencies can be useful.
A recently developed handle can be attached and used to pull a wheelchair rickshaw-style for the purpose of facilitating evacuation in the event of a disaster.
The handy piece of equipment is gaining attention among care workers.
It is the brainchild of Jinriki Co., a wheelchair aid manufacturer in Minowa, Nagano Prefecture. The handle, made of stainless steel and aluminum, is affixed to the front wheels on both sides of the wheelchair.
When the bar is lifted and pulled like a rickshaw, the front wheels come off the ground, making it easy to traverse gravel, snow or uneven paths.
"More lives can be saved if wheelchair users can smoothly evacuate," Jinriki President Masayoshi Nakamura said.
