SafeWork NSW has launched an investigation into a 'gruesome' workplace accident which saw a man reportedly cut off most of his hand at Beresfield.
Just after 8.45am on Tuesday paramedics were called to the Baiada chicken processing plant on Hawthorne Street following reports of a workplace incident.
Newcastle Herald understands the man's hand became tangled in machinery, damaging all four fingers and most of his hand.
Three ambulance crews and a specialist medical team were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, paramedics treated a man for a significant injury to his hand. He was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.
"This was a very gruesome injury," NSW Ambulance Inspector Mark Gardiner said.
"We have been responding to a lot of workplace incidents of late, we need everyone to be more vigilant when at work and look out for their colleagues."
SafeWork NSW has confirmed it has launched an investigation into the incident.
"No further comment is available at this time," a SafeWork NSW spokesman said on Wednesday.
