Hammer horror as pedestrian hit on head while walking near scaffolding in Edinburgh

A man has been rushed to hospital after being hit on the head by a falling hammer on an Edinburgh city centre street.

The 52-year-old was struck by the hammer which fell from scaffolding on South St Andrew Street at around 12.45pm on Friday afternoon.

The man was rushed to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary but no updates have yet been given on his condition or the seriousness of his injuries.

A Police Scotland statement said: "Around 12.45pm, on Friday September 20, a 52-year-old male pedestrian was struck on the head by a hammer that had fallen from scaffolding on South St Andrew St, Edinburgh.

"He was taken by ambulance to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary where he remains for treatment. There is no further detail on the extent of injury or his condition at this time.

"The Health and Safety Executive have been made aware of the incident. Enquiries are continuing."
