Hamilton Women’s head coach Gary Doctor says a draw with Spartans felt like a defeat - but that’s a good thing for his side.
Chloe Muir and Megan Quigley netted for Accies but Spartans obtained a 2-2 draw thanks to Rosie McQuillan and Sarah Clelland goals. There was further Hamilton agony as Muir and Josephine Giard hit the post.
A point leaves Hamilton bottom of SWPL 1 after Hearts beat Partick Thistle elsewhere in the division. Despite the disappointing feeling, Doctor says he can see his team beginning to make progress, even if the results aren’t quite turning for them yet.
He said: “We’ve had the lead in the game twice and we played particularly well in the first half. It’s the first time we have really been in that position for a while.
“We had the best chance towards the end as well so the players felt it was like a defeat in the end. We should have won the game but it shows us we can compete against a good team.
“We have been really competitive in the last few games and we have been consistent as well, which is the main thing. That’s something we have lacked.
“You’ve got to respect your opponents as both teams had chances. It was an important message as well not to lose the game. That would really have devastated us.
“Instead, we pick up a point and we continue to chip away. Playing against top of the league teams, we have been competitive right until the final whistle. We have made some progress, even if it isn’t showing up on the league table at the moment.
“Previously it was all about building confidence. Now we are getting that, we are seeing it in performances. More wins won’t be far away for us.”
