Hamilton town centre roadworks to conclude more quickly than anticipated

Emergency roadworks on a busy Hamilton street to enable repairs to a collapsed sewer will be shorter than previously planned.

Union Street will now be closed from its junction with Auchingramont Road up to its junction with Auchincampbell Road from Monday, October 18 instead of from this coming Monday.

An alternative solution now being used for the repair work means that it will take less time.

The work is now expected to take around seven weeks to complete.

Road users are urged to follow diversions which have been agreed in conjunction with South Lanarkshire Council.

Access will be maintained for local residents and pedestrian access will be maintained on the south side of Union Street.

The extensive repairs will be carried out by Scottish Water’s contractors George Leslie.

The road will be re-opened as soon as the work has been completed.

A spokesperson for Scottish Water said: "We are liaising with Hamilton Grammar School in order to help minimise any disruption for pupils and teaching staff.

"We thank local residents and road users in advance for their patience and understanding while this essential work is carried out.

"Waste and water services will not be affected by these works."
