Hamilton town centre is set to be hit by essential roadworks next month.
Gas distribution company SGN will shortly begin work to upgrade the gas network in Muir Street.
They will be replacing existing metal gas mains with new plastic pipes as part of an ongoing programme of essential work developed alongside the Health and Safety Executive.
Following close consultation with South Lanarkshire Council the work will begin on Monday, July 1, and last around six weeks. It will be carried out over two phases to minimise disruption.
The first phase will begin on Muir Street for three weeks. To ensure everyone’s safety, both lanes travelling westbound towards Bothwell Road will be closed to traffic.
A contraflow system will be in operation on the eastbound side of the carriageway from Low Parks Museum to Backrow.
The pedestrian crossing outside Low Parks Museum is expected to be closed and a temporary crossing point installed.
From Monday, July 22, they will continue working in Muir Street for another three weeks.
Temporary three-way traffic lights will be installed at the junction of Lower Auchingramont Road for the safety of engineers and motorists.
SGN project manager Jim Brown said: “We will be doing everything we can to limit disruption during our essential work in Hamilton.
“We appreciate that roadworks can be frustrating, however, the new plastic pipe has a minimum lifespan of 80 years.
“This means once the work is completed, Hamilton homes and businesses will enjoy the benefits of a continued safe and reliable gas supply for many years to come.”
