A Hamilton Tesco store is set to close and re-open as Sainsbury’s.
Staff at Tesco Express, at Portland Place in the town, have recently been told that they are to become Sainsbury’s workers under a Transfer of Undertakings Protection of Employment (TUPE) as of next month.
Tesco confirmed the changeover this week after deciding to no longer continue with their lease of the building, making way for Sainsbury’s Local to move in.
It is expected the lease will transfer to Sainsbury’s on May 3 and following an internal fit out the store will open in the summer.
A Tesco Spokesperson said: “We are disappointed to share the news that our Tesco Hamilton Express store will close on April 17.
“Colleagues currently working in this store will transfer under TUPE (Transfer of Undertakings Protection of Employment) to Sainsbury’s, safeguarding jobs in the local area.
“We have a fantastic community in Hamilton and are very grateful to all our customers which we will continue to serve through nearby Hamilton Hill House Express store and our dotcom service.”
Sainsbury’s Property Director, Patrick Dunne said: “We’re excited to be opening another Sainsbury’s store in South Lanarkshire this summer. Our investment in Hamilton will give the local community a new shopping experience and access to Sainsbury’s renowned quality and great value products.”
