Hamilton midfielder Lewis Spence reckons he and his teammates would be sitting as high as third in the Championship if it weren’t for late goals conceded.
Accies’ push for the promotion play-off spots ended last Saturday as Arbroath inflicted a 1-0 defeat upon them at New Douglas Park.
A trip to Morton - who sit sixth and one place above head coach Stuart Taylor’s side - awaits this Saturday before the campaign wraps up at home to Raith Rovers and away to Inverness.
Most recently at Cappielow back in October, a 97th minute goal denied Hamilton a victory during a 1-1 draw. The following week, they drew 1-1 again, courtesy of a 91st minute Arbroath strike.
In total, there have been four matches where Taylor’s team have dropped points, having led the match heading into injury time. Spence believe it’s caught up with them,
He explained: “We made it hard for ourselves. A lot of the points we have dropped have been through last-minute draws. I think that is what has cost us in the end.
“I think if we can win the next three matches, it will put us in a positive stead going into next season, where we can hopefully have a good go at it.
“The Ayr game we conceded a last-minute goal, the Arbroath game away we conceded a last-minute penalty. If we won on Saturday there too, we could have kept pushing.
“If we won these type of games, we would be sitting third or fourth in the table. But it’s not to be, so we need to focus on a strong end to the season.
“It can still be a positive one. We can go above Morton by beating them this weekend and we can still get ahead of Raith in fifth. It can be a positive end.”
Spence joined Hamilton from Scunthorpe United last summer and after having his start to life in South Lanarkshire disrupted by injury, he’s now played 17 Championship matches this term.
The 26-year-old added: “I have enjoyed playing. I am starting to get up to speed now, getting fitter and sharper. It’s just a shame there are only three games left.
“I want a positive end to the season. We want to win the games we have left, then come back into pre-season flying. We are all confident. We don’t fear anybody in this league. Anybody can beat anybody in this league.”
