Hamilton secure contract coup as key star signs long-term Accies extension

Hamilton winger Lewis Smith has signed a new long-term deal at the New Douglas Park club as his stay is extended until the end of the 2023/24 season, Lanarkshire Live Sport can reveal.

Smith's deal was due to expire at the end of the season, but after impressive performances this term, he's agreed to stay for a further two years.

The 21-year-old is one of head coach Stuart Taylor's top players and is a product of the Championship club's academy.

They both contribute to why the deal is viewed as an impressive coup for Hamilton.

Last season was disrupted by injury, but Smith has bounced back this campaign to make 19 appearances in all competitions so far. He appeared just 10 times in 2020/21.

After emerging through the New Douglas Park academy, Smith made his debut in the 2018/19 season against Hibs.

He has been capped at youth level by Scotland. The 21-year-old's deal is a boost for Taylor, who was appointed head coach at Hamilton in August.

His side return to league action on Saturday against Raith Rovers after consecutive 1-1 draws with Morton and Arbroath. Accies are seventh in the Championship.
