Hamilton school holds talks with NHS after second staff member tests positive for Covid-19

A meeting has been held to decide appropriate action after a second member of staff at Holy Cross High School in Hamilton tested positive for coronavirus.

In a letter sent to parents this morning (Friday, September 11) it said school head teacher John Reilly, along with NHS Lanarkshire Test and Protect team and South Lanarkshire Council had met to “assess the situation.”

It is the second member of staff from the school this week to text positive, as well as a pupil who contracted the virus last week.

The staff members and relative contacts are currently self-isolating at home and the health board has carried out contact tracing.

John Logan, consultant in public health medicine with NHS Lanarkshire said in the letter: “I am writing to provide you with an update regarding cases of coronavirus (Covid-19) in people who attend Holy Cross High School.

“A further member of staff has tested positive and a meeting has been held involving NHS Lanarkshire, the head teacher and South Lanarkshire Council education department representatives to assess the situation and decide on appropriate actions to take.”

Mr Logan continued: “I would wish to reassure you that our assessment is that the risk to the wider school community is low and the school will remain open as normal.

“I recognise that having been notified earlier this week of another positive case that you may have concerns. However, the evidence at this time does not suggest that transmission of the virus in school has taken place.

“We are aware that there will be concern for children and young people, their parents and staff at this time, however, I want to reassure that South Lanarkshire Council and NHS Lanarkshire have carried out a full risk assessment and the school continues to complete enhanced cleaning of the Holy Cross school building.”
