Hamilton's Stewart Anderson is ready to defend world bowls crown

Stewart Anderson expects a demanding challenge from the start as he seeks to defend his ‘Just’ World Indoor Bowls Championship crown next month.

Anderson, 34, secured his second Open Singles title in January, beating Simon Skelton in a thrilling final.

The Hamilton man’s defence gets underway at the five-star Potters Resort in Norfolk on Monday, January 20, against Welsh qualifier Daniel Salmon.

Anderson said: “To win it a first time is a huge achievement, but to say you’re a double world champion means everything.

"You've lifted a trophy to be world champion for the second time and be, provisionally, World No.1 after. It was a great feeling and took a few weeks to sink in."

Stewart expects a tough time of it as he attempts to defend his crown.

“The top 16 players, we can all win it, but I think there are a few UK qualifiers coming through who could win it as well," he said.

“I play my first round against Daniel Salmon, who holds a Commonwealth gold medal pairs title – Dan is another that probably feels confident he could get a good run in the tournament.”

Stewart is also contesting doubles with Darren Burnett and mixed doubles.
