Hamilton Rugby Club start planning for next season after campaign scrapped

Hamilton Rugby Club coach Alex Edmonstone says Scottish Rugby scrubbing the domestic campaign means they can plan for next season.

And the experienced coach says he doubts there would have been much appetite for starting the season in January anyway, as had been planned by the sport’s governing body.

The domestic season was twice delayed before Scottish Rugby pulled the plug earlier this week, saying they’ll try to get some form of action resumed in the spring.

Edmonstone says it’s not a massive surprise, and at least nobody is now waiting on bad news.

He said: “It’s something that all of the clubs had probably been talking about and making contingency plans for what happens if it’s the case, so from our point of view it’s not surprising.

“It provides clarity and allows us to plan what the next steps are for us getting ready for next season.

“We’ll have a meeting this week with coaches and some of the senior players, and we’re looking at trying to engage the players, keep in touch with them.

“If South Lanarkshire opens up a bit we’ll be able to do a bit more training, but in Tier 4 we’re really not able to do anything. Tier 3 is individual training, so you can’t train in groups.

“We’ll put things in place for now and when we open up a bit more we can start getting players together for touch games and things like that.”

Starting in January would have presented problems had things been back to a semblance of normality, but Edmonstone says there was never enough time to get players prepared.

He said: “It wouldn’t have been practical, plus we don’t know who was going to come back on December 14.

“We potentially have new players coming down for us, but we don’t know who that is, we don’t know what old players will come back down, so I think it’s absolutely the right decision.

“Starting in January wasn’t something clubs were that desperate for anyway.”
