Hamilton Rugby Club reaches out to community with foodbank link-up

Hamilton Rugby Club have been made a foodbank hub for donations throughout the festive period.

The Laigh Bent outfit were already collecting and donating to the foodbank on a regular basis prior to Covid, and when lockdown hit, players and coaches were dropping supplies off to needy people in the town.

However, they have come to an agreement with Hamilton District Foodbank that they will operate as a hub for people to drop off donations.

Members will be encouraged to take essentials to each training session, allowing two days a week for people to drop items off at the club.

They are also opening their doors to non-members, who can drop items off on Wednesdays from 6.30pm to 7.30pm and Sundays from 2.30pm to 3.30pm.

These will then be delivered to the foodbank.

People can, of course, drop items off directly to Hamilton Foodbank at 24 Quarry Street, Hamilton, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays between 11am and 2pm.

In 2019/20, 9429 three-day emergency food supplies were provided to people in crisis by Hamilton District Foodbank, compared to 8084 the previous year.

Steven Meenagh, Hamilton Rugby Club’s development officer, said: “We pride ourselves on being a family community club.

“This partnership with the foodbank further emphasises our commitment to helping the local community, especially in these difficult times.

“We have always worked with the foodbank in the past, but we are now looking to take that support to the next level, and this hopefully makes it easier for people to drop things off.

“I urge anyone who is in a position to help out to please take advantage of our drop-off services on a Wednesday evening or a Sunday afternoon.

“Once we get rugby back, we will continue with our normal collections on match days.”

Anyone who would like to drop items off at Hamilton Rugby Club should first contact them on social media or call Steven on 07711 162506, so that they know you are coming down.
