Hamilton Rugby Club coach welcomes reopening after Covid case

Hamilton Rugby Club will resume rugby activities tomorrow (Thursday) after being praised for how they handled a positive coronavirus test.

A senior player tested positive on Monday, September 21, with the club immediately closing and telling players and coaches to stay away.

Head coach Alex Edmonstone says Covid officer Alan Clisby and the club handled the situation brilliantly, and is delighted to get back up and running.

He said: "It’s really good news. The priority for us was the safety of all players and staff, and the process was all followed, we reviewed all the processes and were then told we can open up, which is great, as far as I’m concerned.

“There’s new advice being issued to all players throughout the whole club, which is just slight amendments of our plan, but it’s looking good. It will be great to get the boys up and running again, so there’s lots of people who can get back out there.

“I think as far as we’re concerned, everything was done really well.

"First of all, our Covid officer Alan Clisby did a fantastic job just keeping everything going in the right direction, the review process was great, the local health board was very positive about our processes as well, and the staff and players have been fantastic just with their understanding.”

Alex added: “The challenging thing is you don’t know where positive cases come from, you don’t know whether there is any transmission in any setting, but our policies allow us to close off a small section of the club, or isolate a small section of players – that being the bubble that people are training in – which means we don’t have to shut everything down.

“Going forward it looks like lessons have been learned with lots of things, like how fast we can do things, how slowly we need to do things, and if this happens again we will be in a better place.”

Hospitality will also resume at Laigh Bent on Friday.
