Hamilton remember the fallen at Garden of Remembrance service in Quarry Street

Hamilton started its annual homage to the war dead with the opening of the Garden of Remembrance in the town’s Quarry Street last weekend.

Members of the public stood side-by-side with ex-service men and women to pay their respects to those who made the ultimate sacrifice, at the Remembrance service at the top cross on Saturday morning.

Organised by the town’s Joint Ex-Services Association and Royal British Legion branch, the service was the first of four events that will surround Armistice Day on Monday, November 11.

It was followed with the annual Festival of Remembrance event which took place in Hamilton Town House on Sunday evening.

And this weekend (Sunday, November 10) will see Remembrance crosses placed at the cenotaph in the public park, Bothwell Road, at 3pm (weather permitting, and if not this service will be moved to the banqueting hall at South Lanarkshire Council’s headquarters in Almada Street) during the civic service.

Finally, a short service and minute’s silence will take place at the Victoria Cross Memorial in the town’s Castle Street on Monday, November 11, from 10.45am. Members of the public are welcome to attend all the events.

Hamilton branch president and convener of the Joint Ex-Services Committee, Ian Forsyth MBE, was at the weekend service and said: “We welcome everyone to these Armisitice Day events.”
