Hamilton point earns relief after tough period says head coach Gary Doctor

Hamilton Women’s head coach Gary Doctor believes last Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Partick Thistle has handed his side a much-needed boost.

Accies moved off SWPL 1’s bottom spot after Josephine Giard and Tara McGonigle goals sealed a point against the Jags.

It’s been a tough period for Doctor’s side who have lost five of their seven league games so far.

“It’s a game both teams probably targeted three points in, we won’t try and get away with that,” said Doctor. “But with the run we have been on, we take the point.

“It gives us what we hope will be a springboard to build our confidence again. You can see the way the league table is forming already and I don’t think that is of any great surprise.

“The top four will eventually detach themselves but it is important for us to keep in touch. We have moved off the bottom and even little things like that at this stage are important.

“Player confidence has been dented with recent results. It affects players but there was a determination to get something.”

During the Jags match, Jeni Currie made her Hamilton debut between the sticks. The goalkeeper - previously of Hearts and Hibernian - was last with Bulgarian club FC Pirin Blagoevgrad.

She saved a penalty at 1-1 during Sunday’s match, which proved pivotal for a point.

“We spoke to her a few weeks ago,” added Doctor. “I couldn’t have asked much more of her in terms of how she played. She gave the team confidence with her handling.

“She catches the eye with the penalty save but she didn’t have a lot to deal with. But her handling of situations gave the team a bit of confidence. Given she hadn’t even trained with us before Sunday, it was an excellent debut.”
