Hamilton neighbours raise thousands for foodbank with ultra marathon around the street

Neighbours in a Hamilton estate completed an Easter Sunday ultra marathon.

Residents undertook the mammoth challenge to raise funds for Hamilton District Foodbank.

The idea for the neighbourhood event came from Joanne Carroll, of Philips Wynd, whose husband Brian should have been taking part in the Manchester marathon on April 5, which was cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Instead, Brian took it upon himself to run around the street loop of 400m a total of 105 times to notch up the 26.6 miles.

His efforts led to Joanne contacting her neighbours via their estate WhatsApp group to ask who would be willing to take part in doing loops of the street in a bid to complete an ultra marathon.

Mum  Joanne organised a time table of 30-minute slots for each household, so social distancing was upheld.

It was also agreed that a fundraising page would be set up with all the money going to the town’s foodbank.

And on Easter Sunday the street cheered each household on, with families making signs and decorating  the pavement.

Neighbour Gail Massey thought it was a great idea and told the Advertiser: “What a day we had! The relay started at 8am and finished at 8.30pm with 25 households participating with between one and five people taking part from each house.

“In 30-minute time slots, one household at a time walked (some with pooches), biked, boogied on bikes, scooted, jogged (even ran backwards) or ran at super-speed around 66 miles worth of 400m laps.

“Our grand total for all participants was a crazy 214 miles (858 laps).”

And the fun-filled neighbourhood has raised a whopping £2730 for Hamilton District Foodbank to date.

Gail added: “It really was lots of fun whilst adhering to good social distancing but most importantly raising a fantastic amount for the foodbank.

“We are truly amazed by everyone’s generosity and how much has been raised. Thank you so very, very much to everyone that donated, to everyone that participated and to everyone that wished us good luck️

“And a huge thank you to Joanne and family for organising this event too.”
