Hamilton hit kid Lewis Smith gets Scotland cap call

Hamilton midfielder Lewis Smith has been rewarded for a string of top performances by being named in Scot Gemmill’s Scotland under-21 squad.

The 19-year-old, who has been part of the youth set-up at Accies for 10 years, has been chosen for U21 UEFA Qualifiers against San Marino on September 5, and in Croatia on September 10.

Smith, who made his first-team debut against Aberdeen in October 2018, has been part of head coach Brian Rice’s plans since he took over the role in January.

Academy director George Cairns said: “This is massive for both the football club and Lewis.

“It’s a great example of our youth academy that we’ve had another player called up.

“The last time we had an outfield player selected for Scotland U21s it was Eamonn Brophy, and he has gone on to be capped for the Scotland first-team.”

Motherwell’s Allan Campbell and James Scott are also in the squad.
