Hamilton gym steps up to help in fitness challenge

The Gym in Hamilton took part in a charity challenge which saw them climb 790,000 steps in less than 24 hours.

To mark National Fitness Day the team, based in the Palace Grounds, decided to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

And they were in action at the stairs next to Asda for 21 hours, battling through torrential rain with some help from local businesses who donated water and food to the cause.

Manager Chris Watson said: “We created this event not knowing exactly how long it would take us or how much the community would buy into the idea.

“To say we were overwhelmed by the response and the volume of people that gave up their spare time to achieve this huge target would be an understatement.

“Looking back, it was almost an impossible target that was somehow achieved because of our world-class community coming together.”

He added: “Thank you so much to every single person and local business that supported us throughout – joining us on the stairs, bringing food and water, sending messages, donating and bringing together a whole community to achieve the huge target that was set.

“The 21 hours of constant stair climbs was all worth it to raise money for an amazing cause.”

Fellow manager Cat Boyle added: “The local community have been great. We decided to do 790,000 steps as we have 790,000 members of our gym, nationally. It is encouraging everyone to take the first step and get active and help out a great cause

“Special thanks to Nando’s, RBS, Asda, Subway and Hamilton Grammar for their support on this.”

The Gym are still counting their donations for a final total. Go to www.justgiving.com/fundraising/790kfirststeps if you want to donate.
