Hamilton granny held hostage in bathroom while bogus workman raid home and make off with cash

A devastated gran is 'blaming herself' after two sick thugs posing as workmen entered her house and raided her drawers and purse.

The bogus conmen told the 75-year-old they needed to carry out a water safety check before distracting the pensioner and making off with £580.

Police have launched a probe after the terrifying incident happened on Burnblea Gardens in Hamilton at around 2.55pm on Wednesday afternoon.

One of the men led the OAP into the bathroom and shut the door on them while the other raided her house.

In a heartbreaking post on Facebook, granddaughter Abigail McGillivray said her gran was "extremely upset and shaken" and is "blaming herself" following the incident.

Abigail said: "I need some help.... at 2.55pm today two men pretending to be workers entered my grans house who is a 75-year-old.

"Said he needed to check her water as it might be contaminated, followed her into the bathroom shut the door in on them while the other raided her drawers and purse.

"They managed to get around £580 in total. This was at her home in Burnblea Gardens, Hamilton.

"She is extremely upset and shaken. She’s blaming herself for believing their story which is breaking our hearts but we’re just thankful she hasn’t been harmed."

Now the family have launched a fundraiser to help get the cash back for her gran, who had been saving up for a while.

Posting on the JustGiving site, Abigail added: "She‘s had a tough year and insists the money doesn’t matter, but I know she’s been saving up and thought this might cheer her up if we can help."

Officers at Police Scotland confirmed they have launched a probe and they're asking any witnesses to come forward.
