Hamilton eye signings before Partick Thistle clash as boss admits near misses on others

Hamilton Accies boss Stuart Taylor is hopeful of bringing in two more new signings in the coming days.

The Championship side already have a pair of fresh faces at the club following the New Year's Day captures of former Drogheda defender Danny O'Reilly and wide man Ellis Wood from Boreham Wood.

But Accies are far from done in the January window, as Taylor bids to strengthen for their push to make the Championship play-offs.

And there is a chance they could be on board in time for Saturday's clash at home to Partick Thistle, a match which Accies will be light on numbers for with Covid issues and injuries hampering the squad.

Taylor said: "There's a couple that we've been chasing for quite some time and we are hopeful we can get something done pretty soon.

"But, through experience, until a player puts pen to paper you just never know.

"We will keep pushing and keep working hard to make that happen.

"When I came in, it was about setting up strategies and structures so we put things in place that we can work from in the future.

"Those things are now in place and it was good to see that pay off by getting Dan and Ellis in very quickly.

"Some move along quickly, some take time. There's a lot of different factors involved in signing a player, one of them being competition from other clubs.

"But we are looking to get the next two tied up as soon as possible.

"If we can get it done before the weekend that would be great because it gives us other options.

"We are trying our hardest to make that happen."

Taylor added: "But it's not just this transfer window we are looking at, we are also looking at the one at the end of the season.

"That is something that we've set up as part of our strategy to make sure we are always ahead of the game and we are always looking in front of us.

"It's not just about the short-term decisions at the football club, it's about the long-term future as well."

Fans have been clamouring for an addition to the club's striking options since the start of the season.

And asked if a frontman was one of the two he hoped to bring in next, Taylor said: "One thing I won't get dragged into is what position we are looking for.

"I just think once you say this and that, you start getting players wondering if they are not doing enough and it starts hurting them confidence-wise.

"If you don't get that player in, a current player might look round and think I'm not happy with them and then if you don't get the [new] player in it just creates more uncertainty that's really not needed.

"We want to go and improve the club and the team and we are working our hardest to do that."

While work is going on in the background to bring in new recruits, Taylor admitted the club have fallen short on a number of targets.

He said: "We've lost out on a couple so far, I'm not scared to say that.

"But that just shows us we are after the right ones because there is competition for them.

"There was some before Christmas [that didn't happen] as well, but that's football.

"They are all realistic - and we are setting all our energy on players we can get."
