Hamilton defender leaves on loan as former Hibs talent heads to Edinburgh City

Ben Stirling has left Hamilton to join League Two side Edinburgh City on loan until the end of the season.

The former Hibs defender has played 12 times for the Championship side this term but only four of those have been in the league.

His only start of the campaign came on the first day of the season under previous head coach Brian Rice. Stirling has played just 37 minutes of league football since.

He returns to the capital, where he started his career with Hibs, to gain regular first team minutes.

Stirling spent time out on loan at Berwick Rangers, Cowdenbeath, Alloa Athletic and Arbroath before joining Accies in 2020.

Edinburgh City boss Gary Naysmith said: "Ben is a player who I have tried to sign several times since I became the manager at Edinburgh City.

"He is a versatile player who can play as a central midfielder, a right back or as a central defender.

"Although he is still only 23, he has gained good experience of playing football at a higher level after making around 20 appearances or so in the Premiership last season with Hamilton as well as making a dozen or so appearance this season in the Championship with the same club.

"Ben already knows a lot of the players at our club through his younger days at Hibs and I am sure that will help him to make an immediate impact.

"There was interest in Ben from clubs in League One and also other clubs in League Two but from my first phone call with him he told me that he wanted to join Edinburgh City which was great to hear.

"After hearing this, we then had to try and make the deal happen and i must thank the board for being able to complete a deal that suited all parties."
