Hamilton cup hero and former Rangers defender among Accies exits

Hamilton Accies have announced SPFL Trust Trophy hero Reghan Tumilty and former Rangers defender Matty Shiels are among the players leaving the club after "failed contract extension talks."

Tumilty fired home the winner against Raith Rovers in a 1-0 win to earn Accies their first cup win for 30 years back in March, while Shiels leaves the club after a two-year spell, having joined from Rangers in May 2021.

Accies also confirmed midfielder Scott Martin and Reegan Mimnaugh are still in negotiations over extending their stays at New Douglas Park.

The news comes after the club announced their first summer signing earlier in the day, with ex-Accies defender Lee Kilday sealing his return to the club after nine years.

A statement from Accies read: "Hamilton Accies Football Club have today announced the departure of several players after failed contract extension talks.

"Defenders Matthew Shiels and Reghan Tumilty, who netted the winner in last season’s Trust Trophy final over Raith Rovers, both of whom were out of contract have decided not to return to our side.

"The duo follow centre back Daniel O’Reilly out the door this week, who announced to fans on social media that he would not be returning to the ZLX Stadium for the new campaign.

"Head coach John Rankin is currently working to rebuild his squad for the upcoming 2023/24 season, which will see Accies compete in the Cinch League One.

"Furthermore, the Club can announce that they are still in negotiations with Scott Martin and Reegan Mimnaugh for the new season."

Accies boss John Rankin said: “We wish Reghan, Matthew and Dan all the very best going forward. It‘s unfortunate that the lads are going but they will take up opportunities elsewhere, and at the end of the day that’s football.”

Lucas De Bolle, Dylan Stephenson, Tom Sparrow, Jean Pierre Tiehi, Dylan McGowan and Connor Smith are all returning to their parent clubs, while Benny- Ashley Seal, Michael Doyle, Myles Gaffney, Steve Lawson, Adam McGowan and Jonny Ngandu were all released at the end of the season.
