Hamilton counting fine margins cost says star as he provides honest self-appraisal

Josh Mullin believes Hamilton performed better than Kilmarnock despite the Ayrshire club's victory against Accies - and small details are being punished, according to the attacker.

Head coach Stuart Taylor's side switched off for Oli Shaw's opener in the Championship tussle before a Daniel Armstrong cross sealed a 2-1 Killie win at Rugby Park. Jamie Hamilton had levelled for Accies.

The result leaves Hamilton eighth in the league and two points off bottom. It was an improved performance from last week's 6-1 thrashing off Partick Thistle, but Mullin is still frustrated.

"We are disappointed," said Mullin. "We wanted to rectify things after last week and put that to bed.

"Performance-wise we did but we still got beat, so that's a kick in the teeth. We need to try and take the positives from it, but we need to move on.

"In the first half we did ok but we are then naive and let him (Armstrong) cut inside. He puts it into the box and it bounces into the net, fortunately for them.

"We haven't been cut open and it isn't a wonderful goal. It's more of a cross we've failed to deal with and it's went in.

"Every performance apart from the Partick Thistle one, you can see what we are trying to do. You are seeing how we want to play. There's been games where we've been dominating.

"The players believe in what we are doing and we could have went away from this game with something. I think we were the better team but we lost 2-1, so it's frustrating."

The 29-year-old - on-loan from Livingston - had plenty of the ball at Rugby Park and his cross teed up Hamilton for Accies' sole goal. But Mullin saw negatives in his display.

When asked about whether his performance at Rugby Park was his best since arriving at Accies, he said: "No, I don't think so. I've played better but to be honest, I don't really focus on my performance.

"I got a lot of the ball, which was good. It's all good talking about individual performances but we've been beat.

"So I won't even look at my performance. I'll only look at my negatives and try and work on those for the next game."

Hamilton now move to two huge Championship games this week. Queen of the South - who are one place above Hamilton - come on Tuesday before a trip to basement club Greenock Morton next Saturday.

"The main point is frustration," added Mullin. "How do we put that into into good use? We've got the chance to go again in a small amount of time.

"It's taking all the positives from this and putting them together on Tuesday to try and take three points.

"Queen of the South are around us and we want to stamp our mark on the game - but we have managed that in plenty of games."
