Hamilton coach fears Halloween rugby return might be optimistic

Hamilton coach Alex Edmonstone fears a Halloween return to competitive action might be optimistic, and that it could be closer to Christmas.

Scottish Rugby’s Return to Rugby Roadmap always had October 31 pencilled in as a likely return to some form of competitive action, but Edmonstone says people might be jumping the gun slightly.

Either way, he sees a ‘season of friendlies’ as the sport tries to get back on its feet.

He said: “When Scottish Rugby produced their road map, October 31 was a potential start for fixtures, which would be great. I would love to get started there.

“That effectively gives you the whole of October to do pre-season friendlies, so we’re hoping that is still the case – if not, we’ll just push everything back accordingly.

“October 31 was a ‘not before’ date, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was after that date, even much later.

"I wouldn't be surprised if we weren’t back until after Christmas, to be honest, but we just don’t know.

“If they were to do full leagues, what I’m hearing is that they would struggle to get those played.

"Isuggested home and away but that isn't allowed, it would need a special general meeting to agree that, and they're not going to do that.

“I think what they’ll do is put us into regional groups and play regional fixtures, as a bit of a season of friendlies. You’ll compete for the title of whatever region you’re in.

“Scottish Rugby will give clubs options, hopefully the clubs can agree the way forward and we can get back playing rugby, which is what I think people want to do.

"If that means the league doesn't go ahead because we just don't have enough time, then so be it - we just want to play a few games."
