Hamilton Boxing Club have been left delighted after technical advisor Jim Stirling was promoted to Chair of the Boxing Scotland Officials Committee.
The Officials Committee replaces the R&J Commission, which has been dissolved. It will be responsible for driving the new Officials Pathway.
Stirling also acts as the chair for the Western District and wants to use his new role to help improve boxing officiating in Scotland.
“Within Scotland we have a really good group of working officials who give up their time for the love of the sport,” he said. “But we should all take the opportunity that has been presented to us with the new pathway to get better at our chosen discipline.
“Whether it is judging, refereeing, or technical delegate, a structured approach will help deliver this. The committee membership has a very good mix of active referees, judges, technical delegates and administrators who volunteered for the committee.
“It’s in the belief that they can help to improve the quality of the boxing, which will in turn improve the quality of the boxers. This is the common goal which collectively must come above personal interests.”
Stirling’s father, Jimmy, along with brother John, run Hamilton Boxing Club. Stirling senior is pleased to see the club busy in the aftermath of Covid lockdowns, with Jim’s new role a further boost.
“I am in my 70s and my two boys do lots of the running of the club,” he said.
“Jim organises with the Western District and I do the matchmaking. John does lots of the heavy lifting and coaching in the club.
“We run the club between us, alongside a couple of guys. We were shut for a year and now the club is jumping. I have a waiting list to join us.”
