Hamilton boxer Jordan Grant targets title shot and wants to hit the big time

Jordan Grant wants to be one of the biggest names in Scottish boxing, and is aiming for a title shot this year.

Light-heavyweight fighter Grant says he will be in the ear of promoter Sam Kynoch, looking for as many big fights as he can get in 2022, before going for the Scottish light-heavyweight title.

Kynoch has lined up a bout at Trump Turnberry on Friday, February 18, as part of the FightZone Fight Night that is being run in conjunction with Fight Academy.

Jordan expects to be up against Harry Matthews, and knows it will be tough, but he’s looking to make a name for himself.

‘The Game’ said: “This year is looking good, I want to push on for titles.

“I want to push on for the Scottish title this year, so I’ll get this fight as a wee warm-up and hopefully I can get some domestic fights.

“I want to get in my promoter’s ear, I want to be one of the top names in the light-heavyweight division in Scotland.

“This can put me on the map, especially with it being on FightZone, so I want to use that platform and hopefully I can impress them as well.

“Sam has put me in a good position, so hopefully he’s got big fights planned for me for the rest of the year.”

The 24-year-old added: “Getting a title shot would mean everything, that’s what you do it for. You do it for these big opportunities, to get the title fights.

“This is why we’re in the game.

“It would be mad to say you do it just because you love it – you do it because you want to put your name in the history books, win titles, and obviously pay the bills!

“These bigger fights pay the bills, that’s what I’m looking for, but I want to see how far I can take it.”

Matthews, 33, will provide a formidable opponent for Grant at Turnberry, but the Hamilton man hopes he can bring his ‘A’ game.

He said: “Another guy I spar with, Darren Johnstone, fought him on his debut, so if it is the same guy – which we’ve been told it is – that’s who I’ll be fighting.

“He’s durable, and he was a prospect himself. He won his first few fights, maybe a dozen or more, so he’s a tricky customer and I’ll just need to go in there focused and work on everything I’ve trained for.”
