Hamilton boss Brian Rice hails Ryan Fulton save but warns mis-firing strikers to find their form

Hamilton Accies boss Brian Rice hailed his side's defensive heroics as a Ryan Fulton wonder save earned them a point in a goalless stalemate with Dundee United.

But with his side's defensive unit in good form, Rice insists it's now time for his mis-firing strikers to find theirs.

Fulton, who returned from injury to take the gloves from Kyle Gourlay, pulled off a stunning point-blank save to deny Ian Harkes a certain goal midway through the first-half.

However, Accies had chances of their own with Callum Smith blazing over after breaking through on goal.

So while Rice was pleased another strong showing at the back - which wasn't enough to stop them sliding down the table to 11th after Ross County's shock 4-1 win over Aberdeen - he knows they still have to improve up top.

Rice said: "It's a fantastic save. That's why I put him back in because he is my number one.

"Kyle did fantastic when he come in. He knows Ryan is my number one, but Ryan knows he's got competition now.

"I thought Jamie Hamilton was absolutely outstanding. For an 18-year-old in the Premiership, I thought he was outstanding.

"We've addressed the situation of losing goals, now we need to get back to scoring goals.

"Callum had a great chance. He's got to do better than that and the kid knows that.

"He's got to show a bit of composure.

"That's where he's got to learn.

"We can't keep making excuses. The strikers haven't scored enough goals this season.

"We know that and we are trying to address it.

"We've been working non-stop to get one or two to help us in that department, but it's really difficult.

"I think a goal either way would have won it, but I think a point each way was deserved."

The return of skipper Brian Easton and Aaron Martin to the backline after injury and Covid protocols, respectively, helped Accies record a third clean sheet in four games, following last week's 2-0 defeat at Kilmarnock.

And Rice admits it's a massive boost for them.

He added: "We saw last week when I lost Aaron and Easty [how important they are for Hamilton defensively}.

"We can only have so many in our squad, we are Hamilton and we know what the finances are like.

"So when the experienced boys go out, the young ones have got to come in. That's how it works and I thought the kids did alright last week.

"But you can see the difference with the experience of Brian and Aaron coming in there and helping them.

"Hamilton is built on bringing the kids through and getting result - and they must be getting results because I don't think they've been relegated in the last seven years.

"It works - it's just about getting the right ones in along with the kids.

"And you see when I bring Aaron Martin in, he's definitely helping Jamie Hamilton back there.

"If you look through the team, Hamilton, [Hakeem] Odoffin, [Andy] Winter, Smith, [David] Moyo - there's probably not even 100 appearances in the Premiership between the lot of them, so they are learning on the job."

Dundee United are unbeaten in three meetings with Accies this season now, having drawn 1-1 in September and won 2-1 in November at Tannadice.

And boss Micky Mellon said: “It shows how far we’ve come when we go into the dressing room and everyone’s disappointed that we've not taken three points at a place like Hamilton."
