Hamilton and Celtic clashes with Aberdeen in limbo as Nicola Sturgeon declines to 'speculate'

Nicola Sturgeon has declined to "speculate" on the risk of postponing Aberdeen's upcoming fixtures against Hamilton and Celtic.

The Dons' Saturday clash with St Johnstone has been called off after two positive Covid-19 tests among Derek McInnes' squad forced a further six players into a fortnight's self-isolation.

Given the timescale of isolation and health advice, questions have been raised about the impact the outbreak will have on Accies visit to Pittodrie on Wednesday, and their trip to Glasgow to face Celtic next Saturday.

When asked at her daily briefing about the impact of the rules on the upcoming games, the First Minister said: "I'm not going to speculate on future fixtures.

"We had a meeting this morning between the Sports Minister, the SFA and the SPFL, and discussion were had.

"I wasn't personally present at that meeting but the Scottish Government was very clear, and the decision was taken to postpone tomorrows match.

"I appreciate there will always be arguments for and against. I see on social media the argument that Aberdeen should have been made to play the match as it would have been a sanction to have Aberdeen play with a depleted squad.

"My concern is not having this virus spread. If there is even the chance of taking the virus from one part of the country to another I won't do that.

"None of this is easy but if everyone tries to abide by the rules we won't get into this position.

"Wherever we have to take decisions like this it's because something has went wrong along the way."

Lanarkshire Live Sport understands that Hamilton Accies believe the visit to the Granite City is currently going ahead as planned.
