Hamilton Accies Women get Cup off to a flier with thumping win

Hamilton Accies Women got their SWPL Cup Group B campaign off to a great start as they beat Queen’s Park 6-1 at Lesser Hampden on Sunday.

Players from both teams weathered Storm Dennis, but it didn’t hold Accies back, as they racked up an impressive scoreline.

That will provide a boost as they gear up to host Stirling Uni in their SWPL2 opener on Sunday.

A double from captain Amy Anderson and strikes by Ellie Kane, MT Gardiner, Dionne Brown and a debut goal for Georgie McTear fired Accies to the top of the Group B table.

Accies dominated from the start and that early pressure paid off when McTear scored her first Hamilton goal from a Kirstie McIntosh corner.

The visitors got their second goal when Gardiner’s cross was met by Kane, who fired past Toni Harkness.

Weather conditions weren’t stopping Accies, and moments later Anderson latched onto a Kane through ball, raced into the box and fired home.

Accies boss Gary Doctor replaced Kane with Brown, but Queen’s Park started the second half the better side.

An early corner saw a header strike the crossbar, before being booted clear.

Teigen McCann went close for Accies as she shot wide of the post, but minutes later she squared for Brown, who made no mistake in firing home her first goal of the new campaign.

Accies handed Hannah Coakley her debut, having signed from Rangers in the summer, but Queen’s Park got on the score-sheet as Ashley McKeown beat goalkeeper Lauren Grant for the first time in the match with a well-placed shot.

Accies again fired into action with debuting Lauren Evans, who set up Gardiner to hit her 30th club goal, smashing home a rebound after Harkness had saved her initial effort.

Anderson had the final say in the match though, when a neat Evans back-heel landed in her path and she fired a wonder strike high into the net.
