Hamilton Accies Women coach Gary Doctor eyes first Lanarkshire derby win

Gary Doctor won’t have to motivate Accies Women before their first-ever Lanarkshire derby against Motherwell on Sunday, but wants them to take lessons from their 3-1 defeat against Glasgow City into the Alliance Park clash.

There will be former teammates clashing head to head on both sides, and Doctor says Accies and Well will both see it as a chance for three points.

He said: “I would expect this to have more flow, be more end-to-end and open, from our point of view to be more attacking, and we want to pose our opponents problems.

“It’s then down to ‘can we deliver in those key moments in the game’, can we make sure we take that defensive solidity into the game against Motherwell, and give ourselves a platform to get a positive result.

“There are a lot of ex-Hamilton players at Motherwell, and we have one or two ourselves that had spells at Motherwell.

“Until the game is played I think it’s one we can look forward to and hopefully get a result, and push ourselves up the league table.”

Having been demolished by City in previous games, Doctor was pleased with his side’s performance, but there’s still disappointment after losing 3-1.

He said: “There was a little bit more solidity about our play, and it’s certainly an improvement.

“The players came off, feeling that they had competed.

“We asked them to show that mental toughness when we were under pressure, so there was hopefully a progression, though it was the same result.”
